October had the nerve to chill down to 33°F over the previous night and so the morning presented the farm with the first frost of 2018. I didn’t mind much at all. I even skipped lighting the fire before bed last night, but still kept toasty warm with a cat, three rat terriers and the Farm Boy all cozied up next to me under the covers.
The Farm Boy didn’t have to work yesterday, so he spent time making a pot of homemade beans and cornbread – from scratch. I’m a lucky girl. What a great dinner to come home to on a chilly Fall evening.
My long commute to work this morning had me thinking of all the things I love about this time of year – mulled wine and hot cider, putting up firewood, hearty soups and stews, baking, riding my horse through the fall leaves, horror movies…
Can’t help it… I live for all the bone-chilling horror movies that are on TV this time of year. Even though I rarely watch TV, I do try to catch as many horror shows as I can leading up to Halloween. It’s my thing.
Speaking of bone-chilling, according to the Weather Channel we’re expecting a weak El Niño this winter. Meaning if all goes well we should see warmer, drier conditions and above-average temperatures for the Great Lakes region. Which also means less “bone-chilling” overall. My bones hate the cold.
You do know this warmer El Niño weather will only occur if I order extra slab wood as a precaution against the possibility of an extremely cold winter. That’s how shit works.
As usual, I’m currently way behind with the wood cutting. I’m hoping for the weekend to hold off with the rain so I can get caught up. Not likely though. ~A
