As I sit here writing and looking out the window, the breaking news on the Weather Channel is shouting out about a “Storm for the Record Books!” soon approaching. We’re supposed to get some actual winter weather and a lot of snow during the night – in February – imagine that! It is beginning to look a tad gloom and doom this afternoon. And I’m okay with that.
Chicken Updates…
On Sunday I made the decision to kick the teenage chickens out of my mudroom and move them into the barn. I would’ve liked to wait a couple more weeks, but they’re getting too big for their cages to be comfortable. Plus now they’re just obnoxiously loud – like teenagers…
We set up a heat lamp in the barn for them in the bunny’s stall, then put all sixteen of them out in the late evening. They were all doing fine this morning and happy with all their new space. So long as the rats don’t try eating them at night I think they’ll be just fine from here on. Of course they still have to deal with foxes and hawks, but that’s the life of a free-range chicken.
Which is also why it’s time to do one more round of eggs in the incubator to make sure I get off on a good start with restocking the flock. I’ll start saving eggs for the incubator sometime next week after things warm up a bit. Also, one of the two female rabbits is ready to be bred, and I’ll soon thereafter find out if the new breeding male is “adequate” for the job.
Signs of Spring…
My fig tree that I over-winter in my chilly mudroom is sprouting leaves and getting ready for spring now that the days are getting longer. I love seeing the fresh green leaves that are hinting of warmer days to come.
This evening I will cozy up in some flannel, build a roaring fire and wait for this so-called “Storm for the Record Books” to pass through. Personally, I think there won’t be much snow at all and they’re just blowing it all out of proportion. Any bets? ~A
