The other day I was craving the smoky, juicy taste of a homemade pork burger on the grill. The problem, was that I had no buns in the house, and it just didn’t seem fun to have a burger on regular old sliced bread. Though I did have a nice loaf of homemade bread ready and at my disposal…
Anyway, having everything on hand for burgers except for the buns, there was no way in hell I was going to drive twenty minutes to the nearest gas station just to buy some. It was time to come up with a solution.
I began a frantic web search and landed upon “pretzel buns” made by Valerie Bertinelli – of all people. I remember watching Valerie on TV back when I was a grubby little tomboy girl. Valerie played one of the daughters on “One Day at a Time,“ an American television sitcom that aired on CBS from 1975 to the early eighties. Ah, the good-ol days….
Anyway, I really found her buns to be quite enticing… The pretzel buns you wing-nut!. What were you thinking? Jeesh…
The dough was easy enough to make, but I was a little worried at first. After dipping the dough balls in the simmering water as instructed, they looked a little, well, sad really.
But after baking them, they were perfect. I don’t know why I was expecting them to not turn out well. I guess that’s how I often feel when I’m trying something new. The uncertainty of it…. Gives me anxiety and all.
My burger was so good, and so were Valerie’s buns… You should give them a try. ~A
