Today the sun rose at 7:25 a.m. here in my little part of the world. It will set at 7:36 p.m. as we welcome the first day of Spring. The high temperature for the day should reach 44° F.
It doesn’t feel like Spring, and it certainly doesn’t look anything like Spring yet. But it’s here finally. Tomorrow will be bitter cold again with snow coming in for a couple of days. Another Nor’Easter snow storm is coming through. The fourth one this Month to drop the white stuff.
“Toby…” They named this particular storm “Toby.” I always have wondered who the hell is in charge of naming these storms and why they decide on the names they do. I would be so much more creative if that were my task…
Yesterday I went for a walk with the dogs. There is still no sign of anything green bursting through. Everything was brown, as you can see. By Easter weekend all that will have changed. Ten days can bring a lot of growth.
The goats are still holding onto their babies. Maybe the Equinox will spur things into action. At this point though I’d prefer they hold off on their births until Easter weekend, when I won’t be at work and the weather is supposed to be nearly 60°F. Much better conditions.
I have two hens sitting on eggs right now. I usually load up the incubator and have things hatching this time of year. However, I’ve been so busy with other things lately that when I discovered these hens “sitting” I was thrilled to think they might actually be able to handle this themselves, leaving me with less work to do.
The rest of the animals are all doing well. It’s time to breed the rabbits. I haven’t had much luck with baby rabbits this past year. It seems the parents either reject their young or eat them. Disgusting, I know. That’s farm life for you. Ooooh, maybe I’ll start posting a “most disgusting things of the week” post. You know, some of the real, but non-glamorous things one comes across on the farm. What do you think? ~A
What I was up to this time last year…
