Bailey’s Secret

Snow on the farmA friend stopped by over the weekend to drop off a rabbit that needed a new home. He mentioned the rabbit’s name was “Bailey” and she was a sweet and kind bunny.  She’s thought to be part New Zealand and part something else, in regard to her breeding.

Rabbit hutchAnyway, I was more than happy and grateful to take the rabbit and the beautiful hutch that came along with her, in exchange for some honey and bacon. I have only one doe and one buck left, so I definitely wanted another doe to get a colony built up again. In fact, earlier that day I had bred my doe to my buck, and I’m now hoping for babies on February 17th. Give or take a day.

After I got the hutch all set up in the barn I put the two does in it together to get acquainted. What happened next was not quite what I expected…

Rabbit hutchImmediately “Bailey” proceeded to mount my doe with a ravenous lust and “do what rabbits do…”  And yes, Female rabbits sometimes do this as a show of domination upon other female rabbits. So I personally wasn’t completely shocked just yet, but I think I saw the Farm Boy blush a little – or were his cheeks just frozen?

The Farm Boy and I then stared at each other with a slight confusion as I calmly picked up Bailey and turned her over to confirm what might be going on here.  And there “it” was… Yes, that thing…  And “Bailey” will now be called “Billy” from here on.

Vegetable SoupThe rest of the frigid cold day was good for nothing but tending to the fire and spending time in the kitchen making homemade meatballs and a couple of different soups for work lunches the rest of the week.

Vegetable SoupIt’s mid January now and it actually feels like February with the cold, blustery winds, snow and ice.  I finally had to put a heater on the well pump in the barn to keep it from freezing up.

DuckBut hey, there are only 57 days left until spring.  And the duck tells me she’s longing for spring showers…  ~A
