Bare-root and a little beat-up…

I came home from work yesterday with a list of things I wanted to do before the sun went down.  None of the things on my list were accomplished.  Waiting for me on my porch were the four fruit trees I ordered back in early February.  And I received zero warning of when they would arrive… Not cool.  *sigh*

Fruit Trees Bare Root

Of course, I was expecting my trees to arrive in small pots, but they were shipped bare-root, which means they dig the tree up, then rinse the roots of all their dirt to make shipping less costly. They ship with weird gel-like cubes that keep the roots moist and help protect them during shipping.  My trees arrived a little beat-up looking.

Tree Roots

And because they shipped bare-root, I had to scramble to find buckets, water and bags of soil to get my poor little trees settled into, until I will have time to get them in the ground.  Which has to be this weekend, because things are warming up now and the trees are coming out of their winter dormancy.

Sam Houston Peach Tree

The peach tree and one of the plum trees is already starting to flower.

These trees are considered “ready to set fruit,” which means next year I might actually get a peach or two.  Or a plum or two.  But I’m not holding my breath for the plums...

Just another chore to add to the list this weekend.  But it’s all good – the weather should be nice.  And I love digging holes.  (Just kidding)  ~A
