Farm Updates – Chicken Status

First let me start out by making it clear that it’s really hard to get decent pics in a dark-ish barn.  Now let’s move on…

Chicken roosting

Well, here it is October already.  The last quarter of the year.  Why does time seem to go so fast?  The leaves are falling. Snow will be coming.  Better get serious cutting the firewood…

The temperatures are supposed to begin changing this Friday.  The high temperature is set at 58°F and the overnight low at only 40°F.  I’m hoping this will send the Yellow Jackets away so I can get to work filling in all the holes they drilled in my barn foundation.  Stinging, destructive, little bastards.

Chickens Roosting

I did a chicken head count this evening.  I like to do one near the end of every year.  It gives me an idea of how many the foxes have eaten, and how many I’m going to want to replace in the Springtime.

Hen roosting in the loft

The chicken headcount turned out to be horribly dismal.  I counted a total of six roosters and five hens. Unacceptable. You’re supposed to keep one rooster for about every ten hens.  Poor girls never get a break. It appears the foxes ate well this year.  No wonder I have an egg shortage.  I’m going to probably add some new breeds into the flock this spring.  I’ll likely buy some new chicks from “My Pet Chicken.”  They have excellent customer service and the chicks always arrive vibrant and healthy.

As for the rooster overload, this can only mean one thing – I’m going to have some rooster meat to can in the pressure cooker real soon….   ~A
