Oktoberfest Sunday Dinner

Corn stalks

Oktoberfest, held in Munich, Germany ran from Sep 21st through Oct 6th this year.  I was not there unfortunately, to experience the $10+ liters of good beer or savory classic German food, so yesterday I decided I’d attempt something less expensive to give nod to the  culture.

KielbasaAm I German?

Not so much.  Actually, I don’t have much German DNA in me at all. In fact, I have only about 8% West-Europe blood, which basically covers Germany, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Austria. But that counts for something – right?

Oktoberfest Sunday DinnerBut I like German food!

I decided I absolutely had to make the Rotkohl. the classic red cabbage* with apples.  It seemed like it was on every menu when I visited Germany (about 23 years ago…) I loved that stuff!  Go easy on the cloves. A little goes a long way.

Rotkohl also known as German Red Cabbage

Next, I decided on taking the easy way out and made a potato-kielbasa skillet.  I was too tired to do a Schnitzel.  I know what you’re thinking… Kielbasa* is really a Polish food, but since Poland boarders Germany I went ahead with it…

Oktoberfest Meal

Both recipes came out very tasty. Especially the spiced cabbage and apples.  What a great fall side dish with beautiful ruby-red color. And the kitchen smelled amazing – like somebody’s sweet little German Granny had been cooking all day.

Dirndl for Oktoberfest

Rock that Dirndle Ladies!

I could’ve taken everything a step further and donned my Dirndl as I cooked dinner, but the Farm Boy already thinks I’m a nut head so I didn’t want to push it. ~A
