These days it feels like I can’t seem to keep up with anything anymore, including the contents of my pantry and refrigerator. I was digging through the fridge the other day and realized I had some ground pork that needed to be used, and the Farm Boy and I decided smoked pork burgers sounded good.
The Bun Dilemma…
That’s when I realized… OMG! I have no buns! How can we have burgers without buns??? We can NOT have burgers without buns!!! I do confess, I am not one to keep burger buns lying around or stashed in the freezer, and there was no way I was making a 30-40 minute trip just to go buy a package of buns when I had everything else on hand for the burgers. Nope – no freakin’ way.
I took a took a deep breath and a big gulp of wine… And that’s when I remembered I had a certain recipe tucked away in my “Try This!” recipe file. Where I keep way too many recipes I want to try making – someday. I had been sitting on this recipe for about seven or eight years, always wanting to try it, but never getting around to it. Today was the day.
I can’t even remember where this recipe came from it’s been so long. I do know that I cannot take credit for its creation though. But It looked like a simple, quick, burger bun recipe. And I wondered if it could really be that easy?
The dough came together perfectly in my stand mixer, so there was very little work involved. The best part was not having to let it rise – because the smoker and pork burgers were ready to go!
In no time at all I had a batch of lovely burger-size buns that tasted great, smelled out of this world, and were perfect for our grilled pork burgers. Right away I started wondering if I could shape them into rolls for bratwurst or hot dogs… I’m pretty sure I can.
Bun dilemma solved! And these buns saved me an annoying trip to the store, leaving me and the Farm Boy with more time to sit on the porch, enjoy our burgers, and sip cocktails. ~A
