Kayaks, Tomatoes and a Pesto Fail (sort of)

I’ve been fascinated with these fishing kayaks since we got them the first week of July. I seriously can’t get enough of them. They’re so relaxing and so much fun, and we’re lucky to have a big lake just fifteen minutes down the road from us.  So far I’ve caught three tiny fish.  Either the weather is too hot, or I have lousy fishing skills.  I’ll go with the latter.

A day on the lake kayaking

The garden is coming along. Slowly.  I have tomatoes on all the plants now, but they aren’t looking as great as some of the other farmer’s plants look.  Maybe because I started all of mine from seed and I only had window-sill light to work with?  I’m going to add some fertilizer this week and see if that helps.

Tomatoes

These Indigo Rose tomatoes I planted are starting to look interesting.  I can hardly wait to bite into a fresh ripe one – straight from the vine!  Tomatoes that are vine-ripened in the hot summer sun and picked straight from the garden are the absolute best!

One of the herbs I’m growing in my garden this year is Purple Basil.  The other day, I thought I’d be super cool and make the most amazing Basil Walnut Pesto – with my flashy Purple Basil. I had visions of fancy jewel-toned, fragrant pesto atop my grilled, garlic-rubbed pieces of baguette.

Walnut Basil Pesto

What I ended up with was a walnut basil pesto in a color that resembled that of a slug. Kinda gross…

But hey, it didn’t matter because the flavor was just as good as a green basil pesto. And a few sliced up tomatoes brightened everything up just fine. So I’m still semi-cool, right?  ~A
