Springtime

Sunrise

I took a quick walk around the yard this morning before I left for work.  The grass seemed more vibrant and green than just a day before.  It looks like the beginning of springtime now.  There were even a few dandelions.

The wild garlic is getting off to a good start and I’m thinking about picking some this weekend and adding it to pasta.  I’m hoping to find a good garlic pesto recipe to try with it.  There are so many patches of it around the house, and its so fresh and tender right now.  And spicy!

I started a small batch gallon of Mead two weeks ago.  If it turns out well, I’ll have a few bottles to sip on in the Fall while I cut firewood.  If it sucks, I can probably use it in my cooking one way or another.  Right?

A few weeks ago, I was getting desperate for some Spring-like flowers, so I saved the cuttings when I pruned my Cherry tree a few weeks ago and brought them indoors.  They bloom pretty quick when you do this and it adds a nice feel of “Springtime” to the windowsill.  Just put the cut branches in a vase of water (change it everyday) and you’ll have some pretty blooms before you know it.

Tip: When the blooms fall off, I like to save the branches and use them in my smoker to smoke meat.  Cherry wood smoke goes well with nearly any meat. Try it!

And of course, Spring is my favorite time of year to load up the incubator and hatch out some chicks.  Operation “Re-stock the Flock” is now underway, and there should be chicks a few days after Easter, barring any power outages (or Lord knows what else)…..

Egg Incubator

With 30+ eggs in the incubator surely a few will hatch out?  The eggs remind me of Weeble-Wobble soldiers when they’re all lined up.  I’m old.

I can’t wait to show you the chicks when they hatch!  My flock is such a mix of mutt chickens, but I’m okay with that.  At least for now anyway.  ~A

Wait… you guys still say things like “left for work” in Ohio!?? In California, you’re only allowed to “leave for work” if you work at a hospital, pharmacy or grocery store. Stay safe!
