It’s Bee Season Again!

The next several days are going to be somewhat chilly here on the farm, but it’s full-on bee season and the bees are on the go – building up the frames inside their hives and tending to the queens and drones.

Bee Hives

The queen bees should now be busy laying eggs to build up their colonies. A hive inspection over the coming weekend will confirm if they are doing their job, and give us a chance to look for the bee larvae. Can you spot the Queen in this picture?  We had them marked, because I can never find those elusive ladies…

Honey Bee Swarm

We moved the hives this year and the new bee yard looks a bit fancy.  I’m sure the bees think so too…

And just when you thought it couldn’t get more posh – I have quite a few varieties of sunflowers that I will soon seed around the Bee area. That should make it look even more fancy, and how could the bees not love that?

Beehives

I love standing next to the hives listening to the bees buzz and swarm around me. This next photo shows the bees all gathered around the queen.  She’s in a box attached to the green ribbon and is about to be placed into her new hive. Crazy isn’t it!

Happy Month of May… I hope you’ve gotten out by now and enjoyed some of the nicer weather.  I’m looking forward to finally getting the garden planted, the first kayak excursion of the year, and finding out if any of the fruit trees managed to get pollinated, among other things. How about you? ~A
