Finally, it’s here. One last dark week left until the time changes. You have no idea how happy this makes me, and how impatiently I wait for this time to come each year.
It’s been frosty and cold the last few mornings, but I’m not complaining – it’s better than snow or rain!
Chickens…
The new chicks don’t mind the cold at all. They rush out first thing in the morning when I open up the barn and spend the rest of the day venturing further and further around the farm. They’ve got the ‘chicken stuff” pretty well figured out now – scratching, roosting, eating, coming back into the barn for the evening, etc. My flock is now built up to twenty-seven chickens. Lots of food running around the barnyard again.
Early this morning I re-stuffed the hen’s nest boxes. They’ve started laying slightly better again now, and I know they will appreciate the extra fluff when they’re laying their eggs.
Mud…
While the mud is frozen it’s much easier to get around and get things done outside. The round pen that I turn the horses out in during the winter can get pretty muddy. But using this for turnout gives the main pasture time to rejuvenate and protects it from getting turned into a mud hole. This way it grows out lush and beautiful for the horses to enjoy the entire Summer.
“Ouija Boy” is feeling very cooped up in the house, coping with it all by causing trouble, destruction and chaos. I’m absolutely going to lose my shit if I can’t get him outdoors soon. By “shit” I mean my shower curtain. He swings from it like Tarzan several times a day. Yes, and then also my hair scrunchies… apparently they ALL belong to him now. ~A
